Plug Midi Keyboard Into Ipad Garageband
This is something that is very easy to do on my macbook using either garageband or logic express. However, I am not sure how to do it on the ipad or if it is even possible. It should be similar to the method of connecting an electric guitar. Most people use iRig for a guitar, but there is not a comparable product to connect a keyboard. I'm assuming the only way to do it is by connecting the midi to a usb interface and then connecting the usb interface to the camera connection kit. However, I don't even know if the iPad recognizes an external midi controller like a macbook does.

- Apr 24, 2012 In response to squidbabyink. I use a standard USB midi interface with the camera adaptor on a iPad 2. The keyboard is a basic fatar 88 key standard midi controller. I notice no latency issues.
- May 25, 2011 Plug your keyboard into your Camera Connection Kit and make sure it’s secure as I find it can pop out easily. If it does, you may need to restart your iPad to get control again. Open up GB and navigate to the “Keyboard” instrument.
- You can connect real instruments, such as electric keyboards and guitars to your Mac for use in GarageBand. Using real instruments with GarageBand produces not only better sound, but realistic practice, as you finger the actual instrument and not an on-screen keyboard/string set. You can connect a real MIDI keyboard.
- To connect a controller keyboard with an iOS interface, first connect the interface to your iOS device’s dock port. Next, plug the keyboard’s MIDI out to the MIDI in on the interface using either a standard MIDI cable or a cable that comes with the unit, depending on the interface you have.

Connecting USB-based MIDI devices to your iPad is a snap! Many apps like Garage Band, iPolysix, and Tabletop support small devices. Start by getting the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter. (For older iPads, the 30-pin to USB Camera Kit also works.). Connect the Keyboard to the iPad using the iRig MIDI. Open GarageBand, tap the + symbol in the top left and tap New Song. Select Keyboard. Tap and choose a keyboard. Hint: there are lots of amazing ones - give them all a try!
