GarageBand for Old iPad

iPad (1st generation), 32GB, iOS 5.1.1, Wi-Fi Only
I recently purchased a 1st Generation iPad with the max iOS 5.1 and I need GarageBand on it. I have GB on my iMac but it doesn't show up in the Apps selection of iTunes so I'm stuck on how to request an older version of GarageBand.

Since the iOS and Mac versions of GarageBand are different, you'll need to purchase it in the Store section of iTunes. You can just search the store for GarageBand if you're having trouble finding it.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply..however, I think I need to reiterate, I need an 'older version' of GarageBand as I only have iOS 5.1.1 on my iPad. I need GarageBand 1.4..which isn't offered on in the Apple/iTunes store. Any idea who might have an old working link to older GBs?

I understand, but if you download the latest version of GarageBand in iTunes, you'll then be offered an older version if you try to download it from the App Store on your iPad. The App Store has a feature to let you download older versions of apps, but one of the prerequisites is that you already own the app, hence the need to download the latest version in iTunes.

Feb 22, 2016  FYI you can take the.band file created on Garageband the iPad and open it straight up on the Mac version of Garageband and work on it, but you cannot go back the other way. Nor can you use the same.band file on the iPad once opened on the Mac (as it converts it). Using third‑party external musical instruments with GarageBand requires devices made for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The Alchemy synth is available on iPhone 6 or later, iPad Pro, iPad (5th generation), iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4. Multitrack recording requires a compatible third‑party audio interface.

A reader sent this in. He was apparently able to make iPad-only GarageBand run on an iPhone 4 using a hack that requires a jailbroken device. It involves transferring the GarageBand application with changed metadata to an iPhone 4 via OpenSSH. “Surprisingly, it didn’t crash as much as I expected it to do”, he writes.

It obviously isn’t the perfect solution because as GarageBand for iPad isn’t formatted for a slightly lower iPhone 4 resolution but it works well enough. Check out a couple of screenies after the break.
